About the ișura: Treasure of the Moon

I began Treasure of the Moon with darker, nocturnal textiles and circular fragments of fabric layered across the canvas.

 

The deeper the surface became, the more I found myself thinking about the quietness of night.

I spend many late hours in my Manchester studio, and there is a particular kind of silence that arrives when most of the activity outside has disappeared. The same room feels different. I notice things differently.

The circles began to feel different too.

 

Against those darker fabrics, they made me think about the moon — something visible in darkness, distant but continually present.

 

At the time, I was also thinking about global unrest and about rest itself. Who gets to rest? Who is expected to remain productive? And what happens to us when we finally withdraw from the noise of public life?

 

These questions made me interested in night not simply as darkness, but as a private space.

There are things we remember privately. Things families preserve between themselves. Stories that survive without becoming public histories. I began wondering whether quietness could protect something rather than simply conceal it.

 

I don't think the moon answers those questions. What interests me is its presence. It appears above different places, different generations and different lives without belonging completely to any of them.

 

Perhaps that is where Treasure of the Moon sits for me — somewhere between visibility and secrecy, between what we reveal and what we choose to keep.

 

A quiet witness to what remains when the rest of the world becomes still.

Material / Process

Coffee is used here as a staining material rather than simply as an image or reference. I work the coffee-dyed textile together with Adire through cutting, layering and bonding onto canvas. The process allows colour, stain, pattern and surface to build the work physically, while tea and coffee enter the work in different ways: one through remembered ritual, the other also as material.
